What causes FND and how is it diagnosed

What causes FND?, research shows that Functional Neurological Symptoms arise when the brain experiences disruptions in how it transmits and receives signals both internally and to other parts of the body.

Scientists have discovered, using advanced research tools, that specific brain circuits do not function properly in individuals with FND.

It is important to note that much research is still needed to understand why and how FND occurs.

The diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder is typically made by your healthcare provider based on the presence of characteristic features of FND. In my case, the final diagnosis was confirmed by a neurologist specialising in this condition.

Typically, your healthcare provider may conduct tests for other diseases and conditions before diagnosing FND. In my case, I underwent an MRI of the brain, which showed no lesions, an MRI of the spine that was clear, and a thorough evaluation by a neurologist.

It is crucial to exclude other potential causes before diagnosing Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Many conditions exhibit similar symptoms, and in about 25% of cases, FND coexists with another neurological disorder.

An individual may have both FND and conditions such as sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, epilepsy, or multiple sclerosis (MS).

The diagnosis should be made based on the presence of clinical features of FND, rather than solely on the absence of evidence for other conditions or illnesses.

Your healthcare provider may ask you to record a video of your symptoms so they can observe them directly, as symptoms of FND may not always be visible during appointments.
